Venus in Fur

A play by David Ives, directed by Florian Dedio

First-time theatre director Thomas is desperately looking for a leading lady for his new play – also called VENUS IN FUR – when in walks Vanda, an “actrice”, but perhaps the most unlikely candidate for the role.

She is obnoxious and loud – not at all what Thomas had in mind for the part. But against his better judgment, he does give her a chance… and soon finds out that there is… well, something to her after all.

When I was asked to ETL’s director Tom Bailey if I would like to come on board to direct a play, I knew which play I wanted to tackle.

David Ives’s play based on “Venus in Furs” premiered as I was working on my own adaptation at Volkstheater Rostock.

Ever since then, I had been wanting to try my hand on it. And here was my chance.

I had always wanted to revisit “Venus” – and this proved to be the perfect opportunity.

I tremendously enjoyed working with the ETL team and Neues Schauspiel on bringing the intricacies of David Ives’s interpretation of one of my favorite novellas to the stage.

From now on, if ever I come across a statue of Venus, I will look at it differently. And shoes, particularly those of an undisclosed colour, will never be the same. Why? Ha! Wouldn’t you like to know? Go. Watch. That. Play.
